Land Use Planning & Public Works Joint Committee Meeting. May 16, 2012, 6:30 pm. Meeting to be held in the Whale and Ale upstairs conference room, 327 W. Seventh St, San Pedro. AGENDA: Review, develop and approve comments on the City’s Draft Community Plan Update for San Pedro (Action Item). These recommendations to be placed on the agenda at the next Central San Pedro Neighborhood Council Meeting for board approval and then forwarded to the City Planning Dept.

Paseo del Mar Landslide Jan 2012 Status Report

(San Pedro) — Los Angeles City Engineer, Gary Lee Moore, on Friday briefed Los Angeles City Councilman-elect, Joe Buscaino on the status of the White Point Landslide. The briefing included a 300-page Preliminary Geotechnical Report which provides a summary of the progress of the investigation and monitoring but offered no analysis, just facts of the current situation . “I am pleased to report that we have seen no ground movement on the surface or at any of our deep well monitoring locations,” Moore told Buscaino.

According to the report, observation of existing ground cracks around the immediate edge of the landslide suggests that the ground within a few feet of the head of the landslide is tilting and crumbling and may fall toward the landslide. “That is to be expected since nature created such a new steep cliff,” said Moore.

“We believe the projected landslide failure plane is about 100 feet deep in the area of the active landslide,” wrote Shannon & Wilson, Inc, the geotechnical firm hired by the City to perform the subsurface investigation of the landslide.

“The best news in this report is that the homes around the landslide are safe,” said Buscaino. “But given the rain forecast this weekend, I would like to remind everyone to stay away from the landslide, especially the fenced off area.”

The next report will detail what can be done with the landslide area going into the future.

Central SPNC Supports the Docs Rock Program

Docs Rock is a joint effort combining the LAUSD, the IDA and the Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Los Angeles. The object of this unique curriculum is to provide students with an opportunity to study and create documentary films. The curriculum has been granted admission status for the University of California Admission Standards. Downtown Harbor Water Cut Scheduled!

Construction of the Downtown Harbor Water Cut is scheduled for mid-January 2012 and as of January 8, 2012 the parking lot between Fire Station 112 and the Maritime Museum will no longer be available. The Harbor Department will be posting signs in the parking lot the week of January 2nd to inform the public. The lot across the street from Acapulco restaurant will be available for visitor parking and directional signs will be installed.
